optimized cyanobacteria: the green revolution to produce circular chemicals

Cyanobacteria are microorganisms found in reservoirs, lakes and streams throughout our planet. Without them, life on earth would not be possible.

Just like plants, cyanobacteria rely on photosynthesis to grow using the energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide (CO₂) for growth.

At PHOTANOL, we enhance cyanobacterial strains to convert CO₂ directly into chemicals of choice. Such chemicals are truly circular.

OUR TECHNOLOGY: READY TO transform THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY to CIRCULAR & carbon-neutral

The chemical industry has a significant negative impact on nature and environment: besides being heavily dependent on fossil resources it is one of the biggest CO2-emitters on our planet.

At PHOTANOL, we turn this problem into a solution: our technology uses CO2 as feedstock to produce renewable chemicals while leaving fossil resources in the ground.

In addition, our technology requires no arable land and derives its energy directly from sunlight.

how our PHOTANOL technology works

In our tailor-made photobioreactor, a transparant tubes installation, our engineered cyanobacteria
conduct photosynthesis to convert COdirectly into the renewable carbon compounds of choice.
After being recovered from our photobioreactor, these products are processed by our industry partners.

customizable platform technology: drop-in chemicals in line with your specific needs

Thanks to our platform technology, we can engineer virtually any biological production route in our strains. This means we can meet the distinct needs of all our different industry partners, ranging from drop-in chemicals used in the industry today, to new and improved chemicals for specific purposes.

Up to now, our discovery program has already delivered production strains for 20 carbon compounds. In addition, we have identified many other industrially relevant chemicals that we could produce in the future.

wide application range: one step closer to a circular economy

Our chemicals can be used to create a large variety of circular products, such as:

  • plastics
  • detergents
  • beauty products
  • healthcare products
  • biofuels

Our first commercial flagship plant aims to kick-off production in 2030.
